Household Elements
46" by 37"
Sooke Fine Art Show 2023
sfas@sookefinearts.com
Earth as household. Elements sustained in constant motion. Humans as householders on earth, under one roof. The unspoken, moving parts of all living things orbiting one another. Layered with craft-closet materials from when my kids were little: incomplete and mismatched decks of cards, plastic googly eyes, flash cards from French class. Material goods (and their relationship to one another) reconfigured to express human skill and imagination in order to sustain one another.
The Breathing Field

In The Midst Of Listening
27" by 27" Mixed Media Acrylic/Yellow Cedar Frame
Visibility
27" by 27" Mixed Media Acrylic/Yellow cedar frame
The marine weather radio reports visibility in percentages. To hear this from shore means little but out on the water in the fog of Clayoquot sound, even with GPS, you often are not where you thought you were. In the fog, there can be a sense of disorientation and it has proven true through a global pandemic. This piece was finished in Spring 2022, when a way through became visible and even measurable, if only for a pulse.

Ordinary Time (1) Nunatak
27" x 27", Mixed Media Acylic Reclaimed cedar frame
Ordinary Time (1) Working title, Geologic Time, explores our perception of time in the midst of massive climate change. Are we special? Do we matter? In geologic time, the answers to these questions are both true: we are special, and we ultimately don’t matter. Human existence is the meeting point of these two contradictory truths. Maintaining agency and observation; both pilot and passenger on a continuum of earth’s constant geological change and biological evolution.

The Trees' Time
27" by 27" Mixed Media Acrylic/Yellow Cedar Frame
The mark-making of sun and shadowed places as the trees ready themselves for winter–rugged, open and simple. The trees worked and saved for months and now there is rest–a quiet that shapes the West Coast winter landscape.

![]() Beacon
27” by 27” Mixed media Japanese Shou Sugi Ban (charred with fire technique) Wildfire smoke from Washington, Oregon, and California moved freely over the northern border and settled on the west coast of Vancouver Island. Small, muffled human chatter about borders closed due to Covid-19 became obsolete as wildfire smoke took no heed of arbitrary geographical lines. Signals around the globe of fire, floods, triple-digit heat became great beacons; weather warnings of outdated political notions. Tofino Gallery Of Contemporary Art |
